Day1-2

Define the Purpose of sterilization and sanitation

As a cosmetologist, you will come in close contact with many clients. To avoid the spread of disease-producing bacteria, it is necessary to follow good sanitation and sterilization practices. You should understand the rules and the regulations, as well as the facts pertaining to this subject, for your own protection and for the protection of your clients.

Sterilization: The procedure of making some object free of live bacteria or other microorganisms (usually by heat or chemical).

Sanitation: Is the process by which the numbers of microorganisms are substantially reduced, usually by 99.99%.

Power point Presentation

Describe methods of Sterilization and sanitation

      Physical Agents:

1.        Boiling/ Moist Heat: Requires the immersing of towels, linens, or instruments in water heated to 212 degrees Fahrenheit.

2.        Steaming: Requires an airtight chamber in which steam is generated from water by the application of heat.

3.        Baking/ Dry heat: A method of sterilization rarely used in beauty salons, but employed in hospitals.

4.        Irradiation (Ultra violet rays): Articles may be sterilized by exposing them to ultra-violet rays in an enclosed cabinet. This method of

sterilization should be used only if approved by your State Board of Cosmetology.

•                    .Chemical Agents:

1.        Antiseptic: Antiseptic solutions are weaker than disinfectant solutions. They may not kill all the germs, but will prevent them from multiplying. They are gentle enough to be used on the skin. Ex. Hydrogen Peroxide, Formalin, Alcohol, boric acid.

2.        Formalin: Safe and effective sanitizing agent, can be used as an antiseptic/disinfectant, depending on its strength. Formalin composed of approximately 37% to 40% formaldehyde (gas in water).

3.        Disinfectants: Disinfectants are much stronger and have the ability to destroy bacteria and prevent their multiplication.

4.       Germicides: A germicide is a chemical agent that kills bacteria. For ex.

•                          Alcohol- to sanitize sharp cutting instruments and electrodes. Implements having a fine cutting edge are best sanitized by

rubbing the surface with a cotton pad dampened with 70% alcohol. This application prevents the cutting edges from becoming dull. Prepared commercial products that clean floors, sinks, and toilet bowls, such as Lysol.

•                    Sanitation: Sanitation is the application of measures to promote public health and prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

Rules of Sanitation:

1.       Keep all containers labeled and covered.

2.       Wash your own hands thoroughly before and after each treatment or spray your hands with antibacterial disinfectant.

3.       Use clean and sterile towels for each client.

4.       Implements and tools must be sterilized the following way:

•              Wash implements in hot soapy water.

•              Rinse, then immerse them in sterilizing solution (alcohol).

•              Spray implements with antibacterial disinfectant prior to use on a client.

•              Keep all instruments in alcohol during treatment.
