Define structure  of hair root and hair shaft

Hair is an appendage of skin. It is a threadlike outgrowth of the skin and scalp of the human body. The study of hair is Technically called Trichology. There are two main divisions of hair- Hair Shaft and Hair Root.

1.       Hair Shaft- The hair which is above the surface of the skin and is seen, is termed as Hair Shaft. It consists of 3 layers-

i.                     Cuticle

ii.                   Cortex

iii.                 Medulla

2.       The portion of the hair which is beneath the skin, is termed as Hair Root. A variety of structures are connected with hair root. They are-

i.                     Hair Follicle

ii.                   Hair Bulb

iii.                 Dermal Papilla

iv.                 Arrector pili Muscles

v.                   Sebaceous Gland

Describe chemical composition of hair

Hair is composed of a protein called Keratin, which is present in all horny growths, such as nails. The chemical composition of hair varies with it’s color.

Define pH Scale

The symbol pH means potential of Hydrogen. The pH scale is a number scale is used to measure acidity and alkalinity of a solution.

Hair follicles grow in repeated cycles. One cycle can be broken down into three phases.

Define types of hair

Types of hair are determined by the presence of sebum and pH condition of the hair. There are three types of hair:-

1.       Normal hair

2.       Dry hair

3.       Oily hair

Explain dandruff and its types

Dandruff is one of the most common problem of hair. It can be recognized by small white flacks that appears on scalp. It is also known by the medical term of "pityriasis"

There are two types of dandruff:

          I.            Oily dandruff

        II.            Dry dandruff

Alopecia is the technical term for any abnormal form of hair loss.The most common forms of hair loss are:

          I.              Alopecia senilis

        II.            Alopecia premature

      III.            Alopecia areata

Explain the spilt ends

" Trichoptilosis" is the technical name for split hair ends. The hair breaks easily and shows a brush like spreading out of the fibers of the broken-off hair

Pediculosis : It is a contagious condition caused by the head louse (animal parasite) infesting the hair of the scalp.

Explain grey hair

The technical term for grey hair is “Canities”. Grey hair results from a reduction of pigment while white hair has no pigment.

Explain Dry and Chemically damaged hair

Dry hair is due to lack of moisture. When hair is exposed to chemical frequently, hair becomes chemically damaged. Hair becomes dry and develops cracks in the outside layer (cuticle).

6.       Sterilize and sanitize gadgets and working area

7.       Observe the safety precautions for common hair problems

1.       Arrange a trolley with the materials in working station

2.       Keep the tools & equipments within the reach

1.       Seat the client comfortably

2.       Consult with the client about their daily hair care routine and cleaning of hair

3.       Consult with the client about their requirements and expectations

4.       Enquire and note down  of any problem if she has

5.       Sanitize hands

6.       Remove hair pins/accessories from the hair

Analyze scalp

1.       Analyze the scalp for any abrasion, cut or signs of skin disease

2.       Analyze the hair for problems

3.       Analyze types of hair

2.If scalp has any problem or disease, do not proceed further

Draping client

1.       Ask the client to remove all neck and hair jewelry and store it herself.

2.       Drape a towel around the neck to protect her clothing

3.       Neck strip may be used over the towel when using gadgets

Protect client’s skin from infection and contagious disease

Use gadgets- High frequency, Infra red lamp and scalp steamer

1.       Comb the hair to make it tangle free

2.       Follow the procedure for using High frequency on scalp

3.       Follow the procedure for using Infra red lamp on scalp

4.       Follow the procedure for using Scalp steamer on scalp

1.Be careful when handling glass apparatus2. Keep distance of   12-16“ while using Infra red lamp

3. Steam should not burn the client while using scalp steamer

Sterilize and sanitize gadgets and working area

1.       All the tools & equipments are to be Sanitized after each use

2.       Sanitize the working area

3.       Use wet and dry sanitizer for sterilizing small implements

4.       Always sanitize hands before starting a service
